College Decision Day

What is College Decision Day?

College Decision Day is inspired by the NCAA's National Signing Day to reinforce that excellence in the classroom should be given as much pomp and circumstance as excellence as an athlete. NCAA's National Signing Day is when high school seniors sign a letter of intent to play sports at a specific college. Traditionally players participate in press conferences to announce their intentions.

College Decision Day is Michigan's adoption of National College Signing Day, a program of the First Lady's Reach Higher initiative. The goals of National College Signing Day are:

  • To encourage community leaders, schools, celebrities, and nonprofit and advocacy groups to host a “Reach Higher College Signing Day” to support students planning to attend and graduate from college.

  • To celebrate ALL students and their commitment to complete their education beyond high school.

The goal of College Decision Day is to recognize high school seniors for their postsecondary educational plans and encourage younger students and families to prepare early for postsecondary education. College Decision Day is held annually on or around May 1 and is designed to coincide with the date that most seniors must inform a college of their plans to enroll.

Why host College Decision Day?

The following are some reasons why you should host College Decision Day in your school:

  • To recognize all students for their postsecondary plans

  • To encourage and remind students it’s time to make a decision

  • To support the best match and fit for each student

  • To influence younger students as they prepare for college

  • To support a college-going culture and wrap up the school year with a celebration

Please review the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) website for additional resources to support you with hosting College Decision Day in your school.

2016 Detroit College Signing Day

This year, we are asking every high school in the city to host a College Decision Day event at their school on or around April 26. To participate, wear your college gear on April 26th and reach out to the high school you attended or a high school in your neighborhood to volunteer and support a Detroit Decision Day near you.

2015 Detroit College Signing Day

On May 1, 2015, the Detroit College Access Network, (DCAN) hosted the first citywide Detroit College Signing Day (DCSD) to celebrate seniors in Detroit who made the decision and completed the steps to pursue a postsecondary degree. Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States, James Minor, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Higher Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education, Jim Harbaugh, Head Football Coach-University of Michigan, and Ciara, singer/model, traveled to Detroit for the event to recognize Detroit’s efforts and to celebrate Detroit’s first-ever citywide College Signing Day.

Over 2,000 college bound seniors who attend more than 40 Detroit high schools (DPS, EAA, charters, and private schools) along with hundreds of educators, counselors, parents, and representatives from postsecondary institutions, colleges, and universities attended the event.

DCSD was Detroit’s adaptation of the National College Signing Day, a program of the White House’s Reach Higher initiative. Inspired by the NCAA’s National Signing Day, DCSD reinforced that excellence in the classroom and a student’s commitment to pursuing postsecondary education should be as equally celebrated as athletic excellence.
