Participants will find out which courses and resources will help them prepare their students for medical school application. The presentation will provide teachers and counselors with the information they need to assist their students with matriculation into premedical undergraduate and medical school programs. We will discuss the barriers that prevent BIPOC students from enrolling in medical schools.

Operating from a framework of Black intellectual brilliance grounded in the historic art of Kujichagulia (doing for self), this presentation focuses on the necessity of reclaiming to reposition the education of Black people. As our collective sacred response to systems of domination assaulting the intellect and bodies of Black students daily, the presentation is an exploration of an academic and social support network formed to address issues of belonging, retention, and the academic success of Black students on the campus of Henry Ford College. Although localized to one campus, this comprehensive model of success can be easily emulated and generalized for implementation in various academic settings. Nurturing excellence, not deficits, is indispensable to the development of successful students!

Through discussion, counselors and college access professionals will share successful strategies, learn about MI Student Aid's regional approach, and how to implement MI Student Aid services into their work with students.
