Mid Year Musings
My name is Lindsay Regalado and I am a first-year AmeriCorps VISTA serving with DCAN! I recently graduated from Michigan State University, in May 2020, with a Bachelors in Communication and a concentration in Organizational Communication.
I began working here this past August. I don’t have much to compare it to since this is my first full time job out of college, but starting work in the middle of a pandemic definitely brings about its own set of challenges and uniqueness.
For starters, I have been working from home the entire time! My days are full of Zoom meetings, sending emails, planning, and brainstorming. Since schools and students are virtual right now, I’ve been having to think of new ways to reach and engage students for certain initiatives that I work on.
One of the main projects I work on is the DCAN & Get Schooled Detroit College Challenge. Get Schooled is an online platform that is free to all users, whose main goal is to help students go to college, graduate, and find a job afterward. I work to encourage schools to sign up for the challenge, get students to submit essays to Get Schooled, and entice students to create a Get Schooled account! Before COVID, VISTAs would go into schools and give presentations to increase these numbers and spread awareness, but since school is virtual I’ve given presentations through Zoom.
Another main initiative I work on is the DCAN SAT Prep Class. Throughout the school year, DCAN hosts SAT prep classes for Detroit students to help them increase their score to qualify for the Detroit Promise!
I also help with running the DCAN social media. We have Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Every week we look for content to post, curate it, schedule it, then analyze the data from it. It has been very rewarding to see our presence and following grow!
Since I am new to the nonprofit education sector, it has been great to have the DCAN team to lean on for advice and ideas. I have been able to learn so much from them. Everyone brings different perspectives, ideas, and insights. In my time here I am learning new skills, understanding more about the nonprofit world, and meeting new people. The projects I have been working on have been fun, while challenging at times. The past 6 months at DCAN have been a great experience. I can’t wait to see what the next 6 will bring!
