Building Detroit's Future: Skilled Trades as Vital Pathways for Postsecondary Attainment and Success

The Great Lakes State of Michigan, bustling with construction projects left and right, much to the disappointment of impatient drivers eager to get to work on time. Traffic delays have become the morning anthem, with every orange cone and detour sign serving as a constant reminder of the ongoing infrastructure upgrades. Yet, during the chaos and frustration, there's a silver lining waiting to be uncovered. For students considering their post-graduation paths, this construction frenzy presents a golden opportunity to explore the world of skilled trades. While drivers may grumble about the delays, savvy students just might recognize the potential in the flurry of activity. With demand soaring for electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and welders, the construction boom serves as a beacon, inviting the next generation to consider the fulfilling and lucrative career paths within the trades.

Hear me out…

As Detroit continues its journey of economic revitalization, the importance of skilled trades for its students cannot be overstated. Other than the ‘traditional’ postsecondary attainment of 2-year or 4-year paths, skilled trades offer an invaluable avenue for individuals to participate in and contribute to the city's growing economy. With industries like manufacturing, construction, automotive, and healthcare experiencing increased demand for skilled workers, students who pursue vocational training and apprenticeships in these areas are well-positioned to secure stable, well-paying careers. By investing in skilled trade education, Detroit students not only gain practical skills and knowledge but also play a vital role in addressing the workforce needs of key sectors driving the city's economic development. Furthermore, skilled trade professions provide opportunities for upward mobility and entrepreneurship, empowering students to build fulfilling careers and positively impact their communities. As Detroit strives for continued growth and prosperity, fostering a pipeline of skilled trade talent among its students remains essential for sustaining momentum and fostering inclusive economic success.

By emphasizing skilled trades as an additional layer to postsecondary attainment, The Detroit College Access Network (DCAN) acknowledges the importance of diversifying educational and career pathways for families in Detroit. This approach can empower individuals with options that align with their interests, strengths, and career aspirations, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and resilient workforce. DCAN's commitment to promoting skilled trade opportunities represents a forward-thinking approach to education and workforce development, one that recognizes the value of diverse pathways to postsecondary attainment and economic mobility.

As DCAN continues to increase exposure for skilled trade opportunities for youth and professionals, we invite partners to connect with us to cultivate new and unique experiences for our network. If you are a skilled trade organization and interested in hosting a group of students from Detroit or a college access professional eager to learn more about best practices to support your students, contact DCANs Program Manager, Ashley Lane-Barrett at alane@detroitcan.org to learn more.

So, for those drivers who are stuck in traffic, take a moment to appreciate the symphony of jackhammers and bulldozers | it might just be the soundtrack to your student's future success.

Ashley Terry, Ed.D.

Detroit's skilled trades rise demonstrates how building career pathways is not a easy job, but the results can be significant. Just as educators and workforce partners put in the work to build the proper foundation for real world success, researchers can complete this work by utilizing journal publishing services to solidify polish and promote their findings effectively and reachably.

I really appreciate the focus on skilled trades as pathways forward, clear reporting on impact strengthens these initiatives. When I turned similar workforce development studies into formatted articles with journal publishing services, the stories landed stronger and it even created easy jobs like data entry and layout tweaks that helped keep everything accessible.
